Charleston Physician Files Malpractice Suit Against Two Other Doctors

Article posted on:06/03/2008

As first reported in the Charleston Daily Mail last month, a Charleston physician has filed a malpractice lawsuit against two other doctors and Thomas Memorial Hospital, alleging negligence and improper treatment when he needed abdominal surgery.  Dr. Jan Cunningham, a local gynecologist, and his wife were named as Plaintiffs in the suit.  Cunningham was admitted to the hospital and underwent abdominal surgery, according to the lawsuit.  The lawsuit contends that the hospital and physicians failed to provide adequate, proper and safe medical care, advice, assessment, monitoring and treatment to Cunningham. They also failed to perform an appropriate and safe surgical procedure on him, he says. After surgery, Cunningham said he developed an infection. His condition deteriorated to the point where he developed severe and debilitating abdominal pain, decreased consciousness and overwhelming septic shock, according to the complaint.  Cunningham's physical condition was subsequently allowed to deteriorate to a point where he required mechanical ventilation and additional surgeries.  As a result he suffered severe injuries, incurred medical bills, suffered physical and mental pain, emotional distress and permanent disfigurement and disability.
